Monitor Audio ICS-8

The Monitor Audio ICS-8 enables system-improving bass reproduction with a visually unobtrusive configuration. Originally designed to complement Monitor Audio's CF230 flush-mount speaker system, it fits into ceiling and wall cavities and under floors - enhancing the CF230 driver array and delivering rich bass from 40 to 120 hertz.

The ICS-8 is only available with its specially designed pre-assembly bracket to allow precise finishing with plasterboard. It follows the same look and feel as the CF230, with a choice of flush round or square front grille. Integrators can combine an ICS-8 with a CF230 system, matching the front grilles, to create a stunning sounding audio system with a virtually invisible yet expansive speaker array.

Ensuring high sound quality in such visually unobtrusive systems is no easy task, and this is where Monitor Audio's 45 years of experience in loudspeaker development comes into its own: the ICS-20's 8 cm long-excursion driver uses the company's C-CAM cone technology. This driver is angled within the ICS-8's rigid fiberboard enclosure to reduce the overall cabinet height. It operates in a small bandpass range, allowing listeners to enjoy melodic, rich bass.

This bandpass enclosure means the driver is concealed within the sealed box - with just a flexible tube and vent to ventilate the room - and ensures it is unaffected by the construction materials used. In addition, this design offers the performance of a 20 cm subwoofer with a front grille opening of 10 cm in diameter. The ICS-8 is primarily used for pre-assembly installations when and where access can be made - such as in a basement - and where there is adequate joist depth and spacing. This configuration allows the Monitor Audio subwoofer to breathe new audio life into an old living space.

For new projects, the ICS-8's pre-assembly kit makes installation a completely hassle-free process. Integrators simply mount the bracket which allows the cut out hole to be sawn out and - after the plasterboard is fitted - the tube attached to the D-ring. The Mud Bank is attached to the plasterboard prior to plastering and the protective bezel allows removal to the full bracket and slightly beyond. Once dry, the integrators sand down the area around the opening to reveal a beautifully precise, clean edge. The resulting fit is visually unobtrusive, especially when the front grille is painted the same color as the ceiling – with no eye-catching fringes or shadows.

When it comes to configuring an entire system, Monitor Audio's CF230 loudspeaker is the perfect visual and auditory complement to the ICS-8 subwoofer. Integrators can combine the subwoofer with a maximum of eight CF230 loudspeakers and drive it with a single/mono amplifier channel. The Monitor Audio IA150-8C eight-channel amplifier with sound processor, for example, effortlessly drives six CF230 loudspeakers, leaving two channels in reserve to direct a single ICS-8 or even a pair of the new subwoofers.
