Monitor audio radius 390
With the Monitor Audio Radius 390, two C-CAM chassis with 10"/30 centimeters work together. One of these is actively connected to the power amplifier and is driven directly from there, while the second chassis is passive and is excited by the air pressure in the subwoofer. What's that supposed to mean? Well, it's quite simple: Normally, a subwoofer would either have a bass reflex opening (which would result in annoying flow noise) or a closed housing (which would reduce the efficiency). With the second, passive chassis (Monitor Audio calls it ABR - Auxiliary Bass Radiator), the advantages of the bass reflex opening (higher efficiency and sound pressure) are combined with the advantages of the closed design (no flow noise and higher accuracy in the bass) without having to deal with the disadvantages .
This gives you the best of both worlds, resulting in a deep, clean and structured bass that you hardly expect from a compact subwoofer.
A lot of air is moved in the bass. In order for this to work, a subwoofer needs a power amplifier that is really up to all requirements. Since the space in such a subwoofer is also relatively limited, an efficient Class D power amplifier with a switched-mode power supply is the first choice.
