Got a call this morning that the pre-ordered Onkyo TX-RZ70 will ship today. I didn't think twice and said I'd rather pick him up. Then I sat in the car and took on the two-hour drive, I really wanted to make sure that the amplifier would arrive before the weekend, I'm on vacation right now. The UMIK-1, which was included free of charge, was also available and so I could take everything with me.
Once home, the rest didn't matter to the chagrin of my family: the Onkyo TX-RZ70 had to be unpacked, connected and tested. Overall, I spent a good 4 hours familiarizing myself with Dirac and optimally setting up the device. Even the first test scenes show what the RZ70 is capable of: Dynamics, power and performance – always there immediately. A clearly audible jump to the already good RZ50, but the little brother doesn't stand a chance in this respect. There is a clear increase in all sound areas.
I'll use the weekend again to test the RZ70 and push it to its limits, then I'll adjust the report a bit and add a few things.

Hallejulia! What a man of steel! It's almost enough to break you. Jokes aside... I got the heavyweight yesterday and was able to spend a little time with the good piece. I first calibrated the whole thing with Dirac and the supplied microphone and played around a little with the settings and sound modes at my own discretion. I'll probably "have to" look into the topic of Dirac and the external microphone again in the next few days, that's a topic in itself. You have to get used to a new device first. What I really like is the on-screen menu with the information and the step-by-step instructions at the beginning. The pressure in my Canton Chrono SL speakers also immediately increased significantly compared to the old Yamaha. I think that with the right settings and the right room measurement there is still room for improvement. Unfortunately there is no FM or DAB+ tuner built in. Internet radio and the supplied streaming services provide a solution. I wouldn't have used FM anyway and probably not DAB+ either. Well, I hardly listen to the radio anyway. But maybe it's an important topic for some people? So far I've had the most fun with the THX sound modes. Somehow I always get a little more out of them. After about 24 hours of use I can "only" give positive feedback.

My pre-ordered RZ70 was finally delivered last week and I was able to work extensively with it, including the microphone and the Dirac calibration. Now all I'm missing is the Bass Control extension from Dirac, which I'll keep busy with when the weather is bad. I already had an Onkyo receiver 10 years ago and was very satisfied and am now happy to hold such a high quality in my hands again and that from Onkyo. It's nice that companies like this still exist. At other companies I sometimes have the feeling that more is being saved and the prices are being rolled.

The Onkyo TX-RZ70 also supports banana plugs. However, as with any A/V receiver, you first have to remove the red and black caps, and then the speaker cable can be plugged in together with the banana plug and you don't have to screw them in.
