The new 700 series from Bowers & Wilkins

The new Bowers & Wilkins 700 Series brings studio sound into your home with sleek, powerful models to suit any decor and taste. It relies on the consistent transfer of numerous innovative technologies and concepts from the 800 Series Diamond - the flagship series of the brand, which is used in the most famous recording studios in the world.
In a complex development process lasting more than three years, almost every element of the loudspeaker series was revised and improved - from the construction and design of the housing, the new design of the front, to important mechanical components, the loudspeaker units and their acoustic properties.

Aesthetic design, quality details

With eight models, the new 700 Series continues to be Bowers & Wilkins' most comprehensive and versatile range. It consists of three floorstanding speakers, three compact speakers and two dedicated center speakers for use in home cinema.

The innovations of the series include the slimmer cabinets with curved baffles and the protruding driver surrounds, which are based on the 800 Series Diamond both visually and technically. This optimized shape significantly reduces diffraction effects through the housing and the associated sound discolouration. As a result, the new models are acoustically even more "neutral", so that you can concentrate fully on your music without being distracted by the acoustic "side effects" of a loudspeaker housing.

The new 700 series is now also available in the new mocha finish - a beautiful real wood veneer pattern with a clear grain that perfectly complements the slimmer proportions and high-quality details of the cabinets. Along with the familiar Gloss Black and Satin White finishes, you now have three options to choose from.

Improved drivers, new acoustic shape

To improve sound performance, Bowers & Wilkins has equipped four of the eight models in its new 700 Series with the legendary solid aluminum tweeter-on-top enclosure: the 702 S3 and 703 S3 floorstanding loudspeakers, the 705 S3 compact model and the HTM71 S3 center loudspeaker . For the first time, users have the opportunity to combine a complete home cinema from the tweeter-on-top models of the 700 series.

The tweeter-on-top shape itself has also been extensively revised. Still milled from a single solid block of aluminium, it has been lengthened for the new 700 series and adapted to the new carbon dome tweeter chassis, whose lower distortion ensures an even purer sound. The extended tweeter-on-top shape combined with the new two-point decoupling system effectively isolates the tweeter enclosure from the rest of the speaker, creating a freer and more open soundstage.

The Bowers & Wilkins carbon dome tweeter with its breakup frequency of 47 kHz is still used as the tweeter membrane, combined with the improved, ventilated voice coil and the new optimized magnet drive. The models 707 S3, 706 S3, 704 S3 and HTM72 S3, whose tweeters are mounted in the baffle, also benefit from these changes: As with the tweeter-on-top housing, a significantly longer tube system on the rear of the chassis also ensures here less distortion and a cleaner sound.

Biomimetic suspension

Bowers & Wilkins has now fitted all of the new series' three-way loudspeakers with its revolutionary new biomimetic suspension, introduced last year with the new 800 Series Diamond. It replaces the fabric spider that has been used in almost all loudspeakers for decades and causes unwanted background noise when the midrange cone is in operation. Add to that all of Bowers & Wilkins proprietary midrange cone technologies: decoupling of the entire midrange unit, aluminum chassis baskets with vibration dampers (Tuned Mass Dampers, TMD), beadless FST™ suspension and of course the famous Continuum™ cone. The result is stunning midrange transparency. The models with woofers - 707 S3, 706 S3, 705 S3 and HTM72 S3 - have also been revised and equipped with new drivers for even purer sound.

In the bass range, the latest generation of the famous Bowers & Wilkins bass membrane with Aerofoil™ profile is used, whose stable sandwich construction made of composite materials with its specially shaped profile ensures deep and dynamic bass reproduction at any volume.

Trimmed for performance

In order to offer the drivers the best possible conditions for their power development, the new 700 series boasts optimized loudspeaker terminals inspired by the 800 Series Diamond. They ensure a secure electrical contact and are also ideal for speaker cables with cable lugs. The carefully revised crossovers continue to contain Mundorf's highest quality capacitors. They also have multiple bypass capacitors and improved heatsinks for even more consistent performance under changing loads.

All models in the series have optimized flow ports with an enlarged diameter, which enable higher output power and a full, room-filling sound. With the 702 S3 floorstanding loudspeaker, Bowers & Wilkins goes one step further – and thus comes even closer to the configuration of the floorstanding loudspeakers in its 800 Diamond series: the bass reflex opening in the top 700 model is now aligned directly downwards onto the base. The result is a musically mature, powerful speaker that fits effortlessly into your home acoustically.

All floorstanding loudspeakers in the new 700 series have improved spikes that ensure a secure footing and optimum acoustic stability. The 704 S3 and 703 S3 come with M6 stainless steel spikes in the integral base, the 702 S3 with even larger M10 spikes. The compact models in the series also benefit from similar mechanical improvements: the FS-700 S3 stand has been optically adapted to the slimmer, curved profile of the new housing and, thanks to the new M6 spikes, contributes to better sound quality.

Andy Kerr, Director of Product Marketing and Communications at Bowers & Wilkins says: “We are incredibly proud of our new series. By integrating the premium technologies of our 800 Series Diamond into the latest generation of the 700 Series, true studio sound becomes attractive and within reach for even more customers.”

The best 700 Series ever made, designed, built and finished to the exacting standards you've come to expect from Bowers & Wilkins. With the world's most advanced loudspeaker technologies, it offers an incomparable combination of formal elegance and musical excellence.

The models of the new 700 series will be available from September 21st.
