DALI RUBICON 2 C

The elegant bookshelf speaker RUBICON 2 C represents our approach to link the two worlds of high-quality music reproduction and digital audio streaming. The RUBICON 2 C is part of a wireless speaker system that allows you to access digitally stored music data and online streaming services in the best possible quality and play music without the need for cumbersome and space-consuming hi-fi electronic components.

Due to its 165 mm woofer, the RUBICON 2 C is able to realize a powerful and deep bass reproduction in small to medium-sized living rooms. The sound level corresponds at least to the original passive RUBICON models. Their loudspeaker chassis and housing constructions are used here unchanged - supplemented by the amplifier technology from the CALLISTO series and wireless audio transmission with the DALI Sound Hub.

The RUBICON 2 C is available in three cabinet finishes, high gloss white, high gloss black and satin walnut, and comes complete with rubber feet to ensure the speaker stands securely and shines both aesthetically and acoustically.

AMPLIFIER

The development of a high-quality active speaker system involves many aspects. A really important part is the amplifier, more precisely: the amplifier module.

Instead of using an analogue crossover as in the passive RUBICON 2, the individual chassis of the active RUBICON 2 C are driven directly via a digital sound processor and the two amplifiers integrated in each loudspeaker. In this way, the developers can optimally match the DSP, amplifier and driver to one another and achieve particularly detailed reproduction.

One of the two 165 watt amplifiers is reserved for the 250 mm wood fiber bass-midrange speaker. The combination of a particularly low-loss design, wood fiber cone and SMC pole piece makes it possible for these woofers to have minimal distortion. Together with the particularly musically designed Class D amplifier, an extremely detailed and dynamic reproduction is guaranteed.

The Class D amplifiers are based on the latest patented technologies, are self-oscillating and work with global negative feedback, which is used due to their musical design. In order to adequately reproduce complex music passages or violent explosions in feature films, 250 watts of power are available for pulses of up to five seconds.

SPEAKER CHASSIS

WOOFER
Since the SMC magnetic drive developed by DALI produces almost no disruptive distortions, the other components should also be of a similarly good quality. The extremely light and at the same time extremely stable wood fiber cone membranes with their deliberately uneven surface structure come from the same company that also produces the EPICON membranes. The membrane can move very easily like a piston and possible surface resonances are reduced to a minimum. All in all, these measures ensure very detailed and almost coloration-free music playback, even at low volume.

The cone is encased in a soft, low-loss rubber surround, designed from the ground up and custom-made for the RUBICON C drivers. The bead guarantees that the membrane can move easily and without loss of energy.

All components are fixed in an aluminum basket that allows maximum air movement around the cone and magnet system. The use of an electrically non-conductive aluminum basket again ensures that the magnetic field around the magnetic drive is not affected.

The use of SMC (Soft Magnetic Compound) in the mid-bass drivers of the RUBICON 2 C brings with it many advantages, the most important of which is the significant reduction in distortion caused by mechanical losses in the magnet drive. SMC's unique ability to combine high magnetic conductivity and very low electrical conductivity allows the use of a really good speaker magnet without the disadvantages of conventional designs.

The "secret" consists of powdered, individually coated magnetic granules that make it possible to form a strong, non-conductive magnet. The conductivity is only about 1/10.000 that of iron. With SMC, a speaker chassis works almost free of hysteresis and thus almost without distortion.

tweeter dome
A 2 mm fabric dome is used in the RUBICON 29 C. Its extremely lightweight membrane has a significantly higher cut-off frequency than the domes of the DALI hybrid tweeter module previously had. This design was necessary so that the dome in the RUBICON 2 C can reproduce all high-frequency frequencies.

In order to achieve this greater bandwidth, DALI developed a new, particularly light and agile voice coil. For this purpose, the copper wire traditionally used in voice coils has been replaced by copper-coated aluminum. A powerful ferrite magnet provides the drive.

CASING

Housings made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) form the solid basis for operating the chassis, which is screwed directly to the 25 mm thick baffle. In order to optimally fix the woofer and integrate it into the housing, the five screws are located exactly in the extensions of the speaker basket. The tweeter is also securely mounted to eliminate annoying vibrations and resonances.

The housing volume has been precisely matched to the properties of the mid-bass driver and the frequency range it transmits. The bass reflex opening is located on the back of the housing in close proximity to the woofer, which reduces turbulence to a minimum and optimizes the runtime between the woofer and the reflex opening. Several internal braces also prevent unwanted cabinet resonances and sound coloration.
