Description

DALI PHANTOM S-80

Even the smallest model of the PHANTOM S family offers an astonishingly voluminous sound image, which is otherwise only accustomed to from full-fledged floor-standing loudspeakers, thanks to the integrated 200 mm bass-midrange driver and a housing that is optimally matched to the chassis and is only 103 mm deep. Thanks to its comparatively compact dimensions, the PHANTOM S-80 can be used in all channels of a stereo or home cinema system as a front, centre, surround or ceiling speaker. Numerous DALI technologies such as the characteristic shimmering red wood fiber cones, low-loss surrounds, solid MDF baffles, our unique hybrid tweeter module and the innovative magnet system with SMC pole piece guarantee excellent sound quality.

As in the wall speakers of the RUBICON- and OPTICON As standard, the hybrid tweeter of the S-80 can also be rotated by 90 degrees so that the wall loudspeaker can be used upright or - for example as a center speaker - horizontally.

The bass-midrange driver specially developed for the PHANTOM S models is specified in such a way that it optimally reproduces both the midrange and deep bass and, together with the hybrid tweeter, draws a balanced, harmonious and detailed sound pattern.

CASING

The PHANTOM S-80 has a very flat housing that can be easily integrated into most standard walls without structural changes. The development of this housing was a challenge in several respects. With the intended installation depth of only 103 mm, the perfect housing volume for the bass-midrange driver had to be found based on the dimensions of the loudspeakers.

The baffles feature an aluminum frame that fits into the mounting holes and provides an elegant, almost flush transition between the speakers and the wall.

The flat covers are fixed with invisible magnets, allowing the speakers to be discreetly integrated into any living environment.

The rear housing chamber has a stable MDF frame to which the mounting brackets and connection terminals are attached. The back of the case also consists of an MDF board, which is also covered with a high-quality vinyl film. The loudspeaker chassis are mounted in a black painted MDF baffle.

SMC

The powdery magnetic material SMC (Soft Magnetic Compound) uniquely combines high magnetic conductivity with very low electrical conductivity, which significantly reduces disruptive hysteresis effects and eddy currents around the pole piece. At the same time, the desired properties of a good magnet system are fully retained.

The SMC pole piece surrounded by aluminum rings and the 38 mm four-layer voice coil ensure optimally controlled cone movements, very low distortion and high power handling. The low-loss surround, the structure of the cone membrane and the comparatively small and outwardly curved dust protection cap are designed for perfect midrange reproduction.

With this effort, a wide bandwidth in the playback frequency response, a well-controlled bass playback and a coloration-free, natural midrange playback could be achieved.

SPEAKER CHASSIS

The new 200 mm bass-midrange driver was specially developed for the three models in the PHANTOM S series. In the interests of the most precise and at the same time low-distortion playback, the SMC-based magnet system of the EPICON 8 is used as the basis for this chassis.
Compared to a traditional 165 mm chassis, this offers 70% more cone surface and is therefore able to set significantly more air in motion and also reproduce very low frequencies powerfully. In addition, it offers a detailed and balanced midrange reproduction.
DALI's hybrid tweeter module, which has been tried and tested for many years, combines a fabric dome with a ribbon tweeter and in this way delivers a transparent, detailed and spatial high-frequency reproduction like no other tweeter technology.

Both the dome and the ribbon work completely linearly in their transmission ranges, i.e. without annoying resonances or level peaks. The hybrid tweeter module offers an extremely even and wide horizontal radiation - one of the typical DALI sound characteristics. Even the mounting plate for the tweeter module has been optimized with regard to optimal horizontal radiation.

A particularly low resonant frequency, high resilience and exceptional reserves for high sound pressure and extreme excursions are the properties of our dome tweeter.

The DALI ribbon is a real master in the horizontal radiation of high frequencies and an ideal partner for the tweeter dome, which starts above 2 kHz.

INSTALLATION

The PHANTOM S-80 should be integrated into the wall in such a way that its ribbon tweeter is at ear height of the seated listeners. To make this easier to do, we have rotated the hybrid tweeter module 180 degrees and installed it upside down in this model. This allows the loudspeakers to be mounted perfectly at the same height as the TV screen instead of below the TV monitor.

Another reason why we have integrated the hybrid tweeter the other way around in this model is to place the tweeter as close as possible to the mid-bass driver. This ensures an optimal transition from the midrange to the lowest frequencies reproduced by the dome. The distance between the two chassis is chosen so that the frequencies they radiate add up optimally and match the level specified by the crossover.

Even if the PHANTOM S-80 is installed horizontally to play the center channel, the tweeter ribbon should be at ear level and above the dome. This ensures the extremely wide-angle radiation of all very high frequencies, which is typical for the ribbon. In the vertical plane, in which the radiation angle of the ribbon is inherently limited, the tweeter dome placed below the ribbon has excellent radiation characteristics.

In short: always place the dome tweeter as close as possible to the mid-woofer and the ribbon tweeter as close to ear level as possible.

WIDE RADIATION

Since our loudspeakers are designed for wide dispersion, it is very easy to integrate them into any room in such a way that a balanced and harmonious reproduction of music, films and speech is possible over a large area.

The PHANTOM S series, whose loudspeakers are always mounted flush with the walls, also benefits from this philosophy and technology. Thanks to their wide radiation angle, the ideal listening position is not limited to one or a few seats in the so-called "sweet spot" centrally opposite the loudspeakers, the stereo impression is created almost throughout the room. Regardless of whether the audio signal reaches you directly or as a reflection from the various surfaces in the room, consistently high-quality audio reproduction is always guaranteed.

The even distribution of the sound throughout the room creates a homogeneous, tonally balanced, spatial and detailed sound impression at every point.
